 About John Andrew Fredrick

John Andrew Fredrick was born in Richmond, VA and grew up in Santa Barbara, CA.  After having received his Ph.D. in English from The University of California at Santa Barbara he formed an indie rock band called the black watch that has released 17 CDs to considerable acclaim.  John’s published three literary novels, the latest of which, The King of Good Intentions II, is out from Rare Bird Books/Publishers Group West.theblackwatch-stevekeros-1-1-min

Three more novels (two comic and experimental, one literary thriller) and a book of criticism on the early films of Wes Anderson are forthcoming, as is a musical about the friendship and legacies of Dr. Johnson and his biographer James Boswell.

John’s work has been reviewed in Rolling Stone, The Los Angeles Times, Los Angeles Review of Books, Magnet, PopMatters, Uncut, StereoEmbers, USA Today and many other publications.

As a professor, he’s taught Writing About Film and Literature at The University of Southern California, Loyola Marymount University, UCSB, Santa Monica College, and Cal Lutheran University.

He started painting in 2006, using only materials he could purchase at 99 cent stores, but now he uses acrylic and oil and pre-stretched canvases as well.

John plays tennis five times a week and has a son named Chandler whom he dotes on.

He lives in Los Angeles.
